John Bohan

Partner

John Bohan is the Engineering & Manufacturing Practice Lead at Parkinson|Lee Executive Search and is a key member of the senior leadership team for parent company Elevation Recruitment Group Ltd.

Assignment Process

Our success is based on a straightforward and transparent approach at all stages of every search

Executive Search is a structured recruitment process involving the research, identification, approach and attraction of precisely identified individuals. 

As a professional Partnership, big enough to deliver but small enough to care, Parkinson Lee is always flexible, fitting around you and your requirements (and not the other way around). At the same time, the process will normally include the following stages for our clients:

  • 1. Briefing & Specification of Requirements

    We take the utmost care to understand your business, your role, and the kind of person most likely to succeed.

    This is agreed with you in our Specification of Requirements - a highly professional marketing document and reference point for the whole exercise.

  • 2. Identification & Approach

    With a solid structure and sequence, we will then agree with you the Search strategy - identifying the sectors, companies and individuals, refining the targets and taking your views into account.

    Our Researchers are chosen according to the individual Assignment; they are also dedicated specialists and take great pride in the precision and presentation of the Target Lists.

    But at Parkinson Lee, we believe the first contact with the candidate is crucial. And so - unusually - that first approach is typically made not by the Researcher, but your Partner (who is accountable directly for the formation of both the Long and Short List of candidates).

  • 3. Our Interviews

    As seasoned Search specialists, we know that no candidate is the same and every interview is different; at the start, for example, we have to assess and respect the individual motivation of the individual candidate (who may well not be looking to move in the first instance). The best interviews are therefore epitomised by intelligence, insight and intuition and in our specialist areas, ours are second to none.

    With our judgements, we are therefore confident about those candidates combining the correct capabilities and cultural fit. But we are not complacent. Which is why we also conduct competency-based interviews (the questions for which can, once again, be influenced by your priorities and views).

    And finally, if you'd like to conduct psychometric and wider assessments, we also retain a penetrating Occupational Psychologist with a broad range of tools and proprietary techniques.

  • 4. Your Interviews
    Each shortlisted candidate is profiled with a detailed CV and written assessment - including the highlighting of any notable points of interest - and then discussed with you, typically in a face-to-face meeting.

    We will then agree and arrange the interviews on your behalf.

    If you so wish, we will also attend them. This is a distinctive commitment that offers a variety of benefits - some obvious and some subtle - and we will be pleased to discuss these with you. (Of course, the bottom line is, we won't waste your valuable time - or indeed ours - by shortlisting "possible fits" or mediocre candidates; your interviews will be pleasing and productive).
  • 5. Offer Management

    In our pivotal role between you and your candidates, we work really hard to ensure that all parties are well informed and perfectly-positioned to participate in a precise process.

    Communication is key and so is our typical contribution to the remuneration discussions, managing expectations, minimising mismatches and ensuring a positive outcome at the negotiation stage.

  • 6. The Follow Up

    If you so wish, we will be pleased to take out formal references on the successful candidate on your behalf. (And before this, we always take out informal references and soundings on the final shortlisted candidates for you to consider).

    In due course, we arrange at least one structured Review meeting or call with each client and new employee individually, to probe and verify and ensure that it's all "plain sailing".

• Network with target customers (TSP’s & ICS’s) to design and execute a clear transformational plan, to deliver a strategic roadmap for health and social care integration
• Delivery of the commercial P&L for strategic heath and corporate accounts in line across revenue, margin and EBITDA targets
• Able to clearly articulate the available and upcoming telecare and telehealth solutions together with the underpinning platforms.

The successful candidate will be/have:

    The North region includes the UK (trading as AvantiGas) and Nordics (trading as Kosan) and is a high performing region within the UGI International division, delivering 549,000 tonnes of LPG per annum. An opportunity now exists for an Operations Director to further drive a best in class service offering, drive the harmonisation of processes, and deliver significant business growth as UGI International moves away from operating on an individual Country basis and towards a Regional structure.

    Reporting to the Regional VP, this Operations Director will provide leadership and direction to the Logistics and Operating teams across the region, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all logistics, terminal and depot activities for the distribution of bulk LPG and cylinders across the North Region.

    - Setting the strategic direction for the Operations and Logistics activity across the North Region

    UGI International is part of the UGI Corporation, a listed international energy distribution and services business with group revenues in excess of $5.7 billion. UGI International distributes liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in 17 counties across Western and Central Europe. This division is split into 4 Regions and operates under 7 distinct brands.

    The North region includes the UK (trading as AvantiGas) and Nordics (trading as Kosan) and is a high performing region within the UGI International division, delivering 549,000 tonnes of LPG per annum. An opportunity now exists for an Operations Director to further drive a best in class service offering, drive the harmonisation of processes, and deliver significant business growth as UGI International moves away from operating on an individual Country basis and towards a Regional structure.

    Reporting to the Regional VP, this Operations Director will provide leadership and direction to the Logistics and Operating teams across the region, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all logistics, terminal and depot activities for the distribution of bulk LPG and cylinders across the North Region.

    Key Deliverables will include:
    - Setting the strategic direction for the Operations and Logistics activity across the North Region
    - Leadership and management through a period of significant business transformation and structural change – previously operating on a country basis and moving towards a Regional structure
    - Management of the logistics activity in the North region including supply chain oversight for both primary and secondary bulk distribution as well as management of the LPG storage facilities
    - Drive for peak performance in the areas of safety, customer experience and supply chain efficiency by implementing appropriate metrics (for safety this includes ensuring that all storage, loading terminals and depots HSSE cases and safety reports are kept up to date). Hold operating teams accountable for the delivery of such metrics and focus on performance improvement where required
    - Leadership, management, coaching and development of the North region operations and logistic teams. Identification of capability gaps and internal talent development
    - Day to day management of the safe and reliable operation of the bulk LPG and cylinder delivery supply chain
    - Lead the delivery of a scheduling centre of excellence for the regional business driving the determination of tools, processes and people to deliver best in class scheduling services to both logistics and engineering
    - Budget responsibility for all operations and logistics activities, ensuring all financial targets are understood and delivered
    - Implementing best in class operations and processes across the region

Key Deliverables will include:
• Accountability for the future growth of the Tunstall strategic solutions business – develop and implement a strategic vision for the strategic care and health business
• Leadership and development of the Strategic Business Development Managers and Corporate Account Managers, ensuring sales delivery across existing and new strategic and corporate accounts.
• Network with target customers (TSP’s & ICS’s) to design and execute a clear transformational plan, to deliver a strategic roadmap for health and social care integration
• Delivery of the commercial P&L for strategic heath and corporate accounts in line across revenue, margin and EBITDA targets
• Able to clearly articulate the available and upcoming telecare and telehealth solutions together with the underpinning platforms.
• Influencing and networking at C Suite Level within Tunstall’s target customer base i.e. NHS, Government bodies, Large Healthcare Companies, etc
• Works closely with marketing and core sales teams to ensure joined up approach to proposition and customer management.
• Establishes and builds strategic selling capability within the team, step changing performance and delivery.
• Takes the lead in understanding and leveraging international solutions, adapting existing solutions for the UK market.
• Leads, coaches and develops the team, effectively addressing and driving performance.
• Lobbying of the Health and Care sectors in terms of the Connected Healthcare model and the use of assistive technology.
• Works closely and influences industry experts, including TSA & Tech UK.

The successful candidate will be/have:
• A clear understanding of the Health & Social Care sectors
• A proven track record in selling solutions into the Health sector; SaaS (software as a solution) would be advantageous, equally devices or IT background would be of interest
• Commercially astute – someone who can “connect the dots” and find & present solutions to clients’ pain points/needs
• A Collaborative, rounded people leader – someone who can influence and bring people with them
• A mix of Corporate Blue Chip and SME experience would be advantageous

    Following the recent acquisition by CoBe Capital, the FGS management team and CoBe Capital have initiated an ambitious transformation to further build the market position and to enhance the sustainable financial performance of FGS.

    FGS are now looking to appoint a CFO who will report to, and work closely with, the Chief Executive Officer and CoBe Capital, taking accountability for the financial operations of the company and playing a key role in delivering the transformation with a true owner’s perspective.

    Key accountabilities will include:

    • Working closely with the CEO and the Senior Management Team to drive business performance and execute and evolve the strategic growth plan
    • Leading and developing an effective finance, credit and payroll support team
    • Providing insightful support to contract negotiations with clients and suppliers
    • Developing relations with banks, insurances, leasing companies etc, with the objective to broaden the access to financing resources
    • Managing treasury
    • Improving cash management, including financing investments
    • Taking overall responsibility for financial and business controls along with VAT, Tax and treasury duties – certainly including first-class financial management, reporting and control as well as statutory information thus enabling the profitable growth of the business

    In particular, we are looking for an individual with a proven track record of:

    • Comfortably working in a transformational situation

    • Support the Group’s sales function in order to help it meet its future aspirations.
    • Work closely with the Group Treasurer in the management of the groups cashflows, working capital facilities and bank position to ensure cashflow is constantly monitored within borrowing limits.
    • Be responsible for all key external stakeholder relationships and the primary point of contact for investors, banks, auditors, lawyers, credit and insurance
    • Oversee the production of monthly management accounts and providing commentary thereon.
    • Oversee and take a lead role in the annual budget preparation process, including the production of the budget model and scenario planning thereon. In addition to the annual process, the individual will be expected to apply the same rigorous approach to the periodic forecasting process.
    • Oversee the annual audit process and the production of the annual financial statements
    • Provide ad hoc support, both financial and commercial, to both the CEO and other directors in place throughout the Group.
    • Ensure that the group meets it’s reporting and compliance requirements in respect of statutory entities, including but not limited to HMRC.
    • Provide leadership in respect of commercial bonding facilities (performance and payment) and provide indicative bond pricing quotes as part of the tendering process
    • Liaise with the Group’s tenants within its property estate.
    • Lead the annual insurance renewal process and seek to obtain best value from the process.

    The successful candidate will have:
    • A solid understanding of the Contracting or Construction sector
    • Strong leadership capability; able to set and execute the strategic vision and direction
    • A proven track record as a CFO/FD
    • Extensive experience and a naturally ability as a trusted business partner to a CEO/MD
    • Exceptional communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills – able to confidentially liaise across all areas of the business

    Parkinson Lee Executive Search are currently looking to appoint an Interim CFO on behalf of a significant manufacturing/engineering organisation based in South Yorkshire.

    Reporting to the CEO, an opportunity now exists for a new CFO to join the board of business and play a key role in the successful turnaround of the company. The role will take full ownership for the full day to day financial management of the group. Leading a team of 22 the key responsibilities will include:

    Planning:
    • Assist in formulating the Group’s future direction and supporting tactical initiatives
    • Develop financial and tax strategies
    • Manage the Capex and budgeting processes

    Operations:

    • Manage the financial operations of subsidiary companies and foreign operations
    • Implement finance best practices
    Financial Information:
    • Oversee the issuance of financial information
    • Report financial results to the Group and Executive Boards
    • Provide the required reports on schedule to the Asset Based Lender
    • Provide accounts and KPIs for the Board report in line with the Group Board calendar.
    • Produce statutory accounts
    • Undertake cash and working capital management and reporting as required under the ABL agreement
    • Support the control and reporting of project initiatives
    Risk Management:
    • Construct and monitor reliable financial control systems
    • Maintain appropriate insurance cover
    • Ensure the company complies with all legal and regulatory requirements
    • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies
    • Report risk issues to the Group board
    • Maintain relations with external auditors and investigate their recommendations and findings
    • Maintain a currency hedging policy and ensure compliance
    Funding:
    • Monitor cash balances and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts
    • Develop funding solutions to meet the needs of the Group
    • Negotiate and maintain financing facilities

    The successful candidate will be a proven professional interim CFO/Finance Director with a substantial track record of financial management within the Manufacturing Sector, ideally gained within an exporting environment.
    Proven transformational leadership experience is a must and in addition business turnaround and international trade/exporting would be a distinct advantage.

    Hallmark are now seeking to appoint an International CFO. Reporting into the CEO UK & Continental Europe with a functional line to the EVP CFO based in Kansas City, the successful candidate will join the International leadership team and will play a major role in contributing to the strategic and operational development of the International businesses, providing support to the individual markets enabling them to achieve agreed commercial and financial ambitions.

    The requirement is for an individual who is capable of high level strategic thinking whilst also being able to roll their sleeves up when required to ensure operational effectiveness and delivery across a diverse international business portfolio.

    You will provide leadership and direction to the finance function Internationally and play a broader leadership role as a member of the UK Leadership Team.

    Key Responsibilities will include:

    Working alongside the joint CEO’s in managing and developing the strategic review and planning process, enabling the division to evaluate and assess priority areas for investment and profitable growth internationally

    Quickly becoming familiar with Hallmark, its businesses and key values to establish credibility both personally and professionally with key stakeholders

    Continuing to manage finance as a valued added business partner that will always be involved in key business decisions. Developing strong and supportive working relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders across the division and wider Hallmark Group

    Providing strong motivational leadership to the finance function and ensuring the structure of the finance team meets the needs of individual businesses and key stakeholders

    Ensuring timely, accurate and informative reporting and appropriate controls / risk management procedures are in place to provide the critical analysis of key business levers to enable strategic decision making. This is a full-service role without the use of a shared service model

    The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with experience in strongly branded FMCG, Retail or similar sectors. A proven track record working in a multinational organisation covering international markets is essential.

    You will have significant experience of working at divisional board level with the ability to demonstrate contribution to the development of a business as a whole, as well as establishing a responsive, well respected value-added finance function that is known across the business for its strong internal and external stakeholder relationships.

    You be a strategic and commercial business partner with proven leadership experience gained within in a well-regarded business, in addition, you will have demonstrated an ability to work as a member of a high performing team.

  • 30/08/2019 Tailwinds, headwinds or the impending tornado?

    Roger Esler, Corporate Finance Director at Dow Schofield Watts, explores the key drivers of current activity in the deal market and the implications of heightened economic uncertainty.

    Navigating the weather fronts of corporate finance is a complicated business. Timescales for making acquisitions, business sales, buy-outs and capital raising are long, and market sentiment can change quickly.

    The environment for funding and executing corporate transactions has been very strong for several years, driven by a number of powerful tailwinds. Inevitably, there are headwinds to consider at any point in a market cycle. Most notable currently are the gathering clouds of a no-deal Brexit.

    The question for many businesses and their shareholders is whether to look through the storm and plan accordingly or to hunker down and defer investment decisions until the uncertainty passes, possibly missing out on opportunities in the interim.

    The tailwinds

    Business performance is a virtuous or vicious cycle depending on the direction of travel. Positive performance attracts capital and strategic buyers which in turn push up valuations and risk appetite; the related investment drives higher growth. Deteriorating performance can do the opposite. Whilst economic growth has moderated in recent years, low-interest rates, the weakness in Sterling and internationalisation have provided a boost for many UK businesses.

    Secondly, the availability of capital is both plentiful and diverse. The sheer scale of debt and equity funding seeking deployment cannot be overlooked as a continuing, long term stimulus to the UK economy. The underlying dynamics importantly indicate an extremely positive outlook for corporate markets. Banks’ balance sheets are better capitalised, alternative lenders have mushroomed and low-interest rates have resulted in a proliferation of institutional debt funds seeking higher yield with a range of risk/return models.

    In the equity markets, SME equity and tech venture funding have ballooned with increased investor risk appetite and attractive tax rebates for VCT and EIS investors. The ever-evolving UK private equity industry continues to raise substantial new capital from investors globally on 5-10 year horizons across a full range of investment propositions.

    Thirdly, the UK tax environment continues to be very favourable towards business owners. Whilst dividend tax is high, capital gains tax is low and Entrepreneurs’ Relief generous. For a business contemplating a release of equity value or sale, a 10% rate of tax is just recognition of what can have been a lifetime of hard work and investment.

    Lastly, acquisition strategies of large, international corporates have been well formulated since the recession and the UK has been a hunting ground for many, bolstered by access to capital and favourable exchange rates. Disruptive and innovative differential growth businesses have been particularly in vogue, competitive interest being exacerbated by the dual appeal to private equity investors.

    The headwinds

    Economic uncertainty and market volatility have undoubtedly increased with trade war escalation, political instability and an elevation of recessionary indicators. Uncertainty can lead to strategic paralysis but, in measure, the long-term impact can be more benign.

    Corporate acquisition strategies become even more defined, selective and diligent. Lower growth or capital hungry divisions might be restructured or divested, in some cases to buy-out teams. Debt funders and private equity investors too apply a higher degree of scrutiny and due diligence in assessing credit quality and investment case before deploying capital.

    Thorough preparation and planning, ahead of any corporate transaction, are always merited. In times of raised uncertainty, the need to anticipate such rigorous challenge and negotiation and to not underestimate the timescales and complexities involved to get a deal over the line are ever more pertinent.

    And the tornado?

    Brexit has the potential to disrupt and the immediate focus could shift substantially to managing businesses and private equity portfolio investments through a difficult period. However, the tailwinds will carry the UK businesses through that storm should it come.

    With an expectation of continuing low interest rates, low capital tax rates, weak sterling, billions of undeployed debt and equity capital in the funding markets, together with a widely held global view that the UK is an economic powerhouse, there is every reason to believe that long-term investment and corporate transaction activity will continue.

His presentation will include live hacking demonstrations, live ransomware demonstration and a dark web introduction.

    Richard Taylor- Head of Yorkshire and the North East, BGF


    Richard joined BGF in July 2012 and leads the team in Leeds with responsibility for Yorkshire and the North East. His main role is to identify and successfully execute investments for the fund having led a number of deals in the region. He also sits on the board of a number of our portfolio companies. Richard has 20 years’ experience in small company investing with previous roles at YFM, Octopus Private Equity and Sovereign Capital. He began his career at Deloitte where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

    Guy O’Donnell - Senior Cyber Consultant, Grant Thornton

    Prior to joining Grant Thornton in 2018, Guy was head of threat intelligence in a leading UK cyber security organisation. He developed a number of cyber security solutions for UK CNI customers, law enforcement and international clients. Guy also conducted discrete online investigations and reports for high profile customers as well as the provision of strategic consultancy to tailor bespoke training and reporting services. He is a GCHQ accredited trainer leading on corporate training and awareness. He has helped build cyber capability and capacity in the Middle East and in Africa through an FCO sponsored fellowship programme as well as being a lead author on strategic reporting for several industries. Guy worked in GCHQ for a number of years where he established a cybercrime assessment capability and triaged OSINT and technical threat intelligence to produce assessments and advise on cybersecurity threats to the UK. He conducted a detailed analysis of incidents, threats, and risks as well as providing support to national-level cyber exercises.

    Robot Process Automation: What, How and Why?

    We are often hearing how robots are transforming factories and how machine automation has become a crucial piece of technology that we can’t live without. But what if now we could use robots to do automation on another level, such as completing administration and repetitive tasks better than a human being. Giving employees have more time to focus on their other tasks which add more value to the business.

    What is RPA?

    Businesses and industry love robots. Not just the big machines that dominate modern factories, building cars or smartphones, bending metal or performing intricate life-saving surgery. Robots also come in software form, helping automate repetitive tasks and saving huge amounts of time across many industries.

    Among the software robotic or automated services, the rise of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has seen many business and office tasks simplified, reducing the number of steps that require human interaction, saving money and enabling worker time to be focused on other areas of higher value.

    Put simply, an RPA robot can watch how a person performs a computer-based task, and then perform that task repeatedly within one application or across a set of them. RPA tasks can involve moving data from one form (perhaps an email) to a spreadsheet or database, or access figures from timesheets. Other functions include form and order processing, setting up systems for new users, cleansing data of identifying information and many more.

    What are the benefits?

    I’m hearing this subject come up in conversations all over the place, with other FDs and CEOs. RPA is becoming more widely considered but without the knowledge as to how it can be implemented and really add value in an organisation, people are hesitant to do so.

    Using RPA frees up workers to perform more beneficial and valuable tasks. It can link diverse computer apps and systems together, saving on expensive integration projects, thus speeding up processes and reducing cost. If the volume of data is there, RPA can also function 24 hours a day, seven days a week, focused on nothing but their singular task; no staring out the window or vanishing on refreshment breaks.

    Digital transformation is a term increasingly used in finance, tax and banking organisations to highlight the automation and increasing smartness of their services. RPA helps streamline operations and make processes more efficient, ensuring regulatory compliance and helping the business build a process focused method of working, from which it can gain greater analytical insights from data.

    I see plenty of high-value examples where RPA has been deployed across both small and large organisations. Many businesses start with one RPA and then find them useful across many areas, helping improve the overall performance of a business or department.

    For the tax function, the key benefit includes an increase of speed and accuracy when it comes to moving data from various tax or finance forms to other data destinations, such as Excel or tax solution software. It also reduces the risk of transposition errors and enables taxation professionals to focus on the key issues and pain points that affect their office. Being able to answer client questions faster, and process their data quicker, improves customer satisfaction, both inside and outside the business.

    A life without RPA

    Human error when it comes to data entry is around 1%, with some studies showing 0.53% when it comes to technical or numeric data. Even so, one error can have a substantial impact from the cost of time in rechecking to correcting the mistakes. Financial impacts, such as the New York Stock Wobble aka the Flash Crash caused by a B being entered instead of an M into a trade, highlights just how much impact a single error can have. While tax returns might not suffer that degree of loss, it highlights the potential for risk that automation can help mitigate.

    Becoming more digital

    In an increasingly all-digital environment, the tax authorities expect more traceability of data, transparency around services and more consistent information. As an example, HMRC’s Making Tax Digital initiative is driving businesses large and small towards a digital tax environment, requiring new levels of detail when it comes to data and processing authority.

    Using RPA to automate human processes is not only encouraged by HMRC but also allows you to support this agenda with your existing systems. Tax processes use well-defined structured data sources and a series of well-understood steps making them an ideal process suited for RPA. If the processes are manual or performed on a computer, they can be easily adapted for automation.

    This allows the workers to focus on more customer-centric tasks, and for the business or department to reconfigure or redeploy personnel resources. This also provides additional value when it comes to integrating with other solutions such as analytics, where staff can be utilized in the task of structuring analytics in such a way for key stakeholders to have a better holistic view of company performance.

    Getting started

    Compared to many technology services upgrades, deployments and acquisitions, RPA is fast and easy to deploy with measurable results that are easy for businesses to track.

    Here’s how to identify hold-ups and start to build the business case in your organisation:

    1. Analyse the frequency of the task; for tax-type transactions, most of these will be well known to the business.

    2. Calculate the time it takes to do a set number of the tasks and find out from an RPA source how quickly they can perform the same.

    3. Consider the number of people working on the task; how can they best use their recovered hours and how much-improved will their morale and other factors be?

    4. Estimate the financial benefits in terms of salary cost of the time saved and the time you would get back in redeploying those individuals to better or more valuable tasks.

    RPA provides a valuable service when deployed for the right use case, and tax data is one of the best fits with sturdy historical data collection and analysis.

    I hope this article has given some insight into how RPA can really change your operations, and free up teams to spend quality time on the more valuable activity.

    Will Holman is Deputy Agent for the Bank of England in Yorkshire & the Humber.

    Will’s job is to be the eyes and ears of the Bank of England in the region – talking to businesses and people in the region and hearing their experiences and their plans. This all gets fed in to the BoE’s policy-makers at Threadneedle Street in London.

    Before joining the Bank eight years ago, Will worked as an economist in the private sector and government. Most recently he worked at the communications authority Ofcom, setting the prices of regulated companies.

    Will holds bachelors and masters degrees in economics, and holds a deep interest in politics, business and finance. Away from central banking matters, Will loves sport, playing cricket to a strictly village-level standard, and following Watford FC in their Premier League matches across the north of England.

    James Miller | Financial Risk Manager – Lloyds Bank

    James Miller is a Financial Risk Manager in the Commercial Banking Markets Department of Lloyds Bank. He is responsible for supporting Mid Corporate sized clients in Yorkshire and the North East with managing risks relating to movements in Interest Rates, Foreign Exchange and Commodities.

    James joined Lloyds Bank in 2009, following the completion of a PhD in Statistics from the University of Glasgow, and has worked in Markets based roles since 2011.
